So after posting yesterday about my blissful weekend at Uncle Bill's, I hesitate to post this but I promised that I would write about any and all eateries I try in L.A. so here it goes.
The other day, I was browsing the internet in search of some places to try for the blog and came across an article on the Los Angeles Magazine website listing their Top 20 bakeries in the city. I can typically live on sugar and sweets, but especially on great cakes, so I am now making a promise to conquer all top 20 bakeries in the near future.
The first cafe/bakery I chose to try was one that had been under my radar for a few weeks. Sweet Lady Jane in West Hollywood. Known as one of the most popular picks for celebrities (i.e. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi's wedding cake & Jennifer Aniston's recent birthday cake), so I was pretty excited.
The cafe itself was tiny. With about 4-5 small tables and chairs, it's def. not a place for big groups. The decor was nothing fancy but simple and traditional with a large glass display filled with cakes you can buy whole and by the slice. I was little surprised that each slice of cake was $7 but when you're on a quest to find the best bakery in town, a girl must do what she has to do.
I ordered two different cake slices to go:
Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake
The chocolate strawberry shortcake was not too bad. The creamy ganache on top was probably the best part of the cake. The chocolate sponge was not too sweet and had a strong flavor of cocoa but the strawberries were quite mushy. While it wasn't the worst or the best cake I've had, it just didn't have anything spectacular about it that would make you crave for more.
Lemon Raspberry
This cake, as colorful and pretty as it may look, was truly disappointing. The yellow sponge cake was dry and crumbly, and the lemon curd layered inside lacked any real lemon taste. My family kept saying it tasked like "mayo" and the "mayo" cake sadly went to the trash after two bites. As a sweet-lover, I hardly have any sweets I wastefully throw away but this was really bad.
But little did I know, I did some research later that night and saw that they are actually famous for their Triple Berry Shortcake. So, it you decide to ignore my reviews an try the place, it might be a good idea to stick with their popular picks. And with all the other great reviews I found on the place, I might have simply picked the wrong choices. But in my personal opinion, a true good bakery should never have any wrong choices. Well, I guess I'll never know...
